My health gradually recovered by itself and I was discharged without ever finding out exactly what was wrong with me. After being discha I first started studying Chen style taiji, or in fact any kind of martial art or health exercise, while I was attending college in Manchester studying Music Technology.
I had taken a year out after finishing my A levels to go traveling. Upon my return and the commencement of my course I was taken ill. The doctors were at a loss as to what was wrong with me and assumed it was something I had brought back from South East Asia. I was consequently admitted to the infectious diseases unit of the North Manchester General hospital.
rged from hospital the symptoms of the illness would re-occur whenever I felt rundown. I personally felt that the problem was with my immune system, if there were any colds floating around I would catch them and if I over exerted myself in anyway then the symptoms would again re-surface. I decided that I needed to improve my general level of health and fitness thereby hopefully strengthening my immune system.
I had for a long time been interested in martial arts but had never taken the time to begin practicing one. A friend of mine who had practiced various martial arts since the seventies recommended taiji and in particular Chen style taiji to me. I had a look in the local phone book and came across an advert for the Manchester Chen style Association with classes instructed by Master Liming Yue. I enrolled in the classes and through regular practice my health and fitness improved rapidly. I really enjoyed practicing taiji and attending the classes, gradually becoming more and more involved.
In 2002 along with other taiji students I traveled to China on a trip organized by Master Liming Yue which culminated in attending the 2002 International Taiji Festival. During the festival I was lucky enough to be introduced to Master Chen Yu, as his father Master Chen Zhaokui had taught Master Liming’s Teacher. During the festival our group had the pleasure of dining with Master Chen Yu on two occasions. I was amazed by his level of skill and had never seen anything like it before. His ability to effortlessly apply taiji was outstanding and that along with his magnetic personality left me with an extremely deep impression.
Upon returning to London where I had been working in the music industry since completing my course in Manchester, I suddenly lost my job. Subsequently I went through a series of jobs that did not really interest me and so decided that I wanted to read for a degree. The natural choice for me was a degree in Chinese as taiji apart from music was the only other thing I was really interested in. I managed to gain a place reading for a B.A. in Modern and Classical Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. I successfully completed the first year of the course and am now half way through the second year, which is a year abroad attending Beijing Normal University in China.
Upon arriving in China I managed to make contact with Master Chen Yu and began practicing with him in Beijing. It took me some time to become accustomed to the difference in training methods between China and the U.K. In England for a lot of people practicing taiji is more of a social activity and pure health exercise rather than a serious martial art. Before coming to China I had been living in London and traveling to Manchester for lessons when I had the time and money, so most of my recent training had been on my own. Coming to China and having such direct instructions and frequent lessons from Master Chen Yu was a big change but it was one that I relished. I found the training to be very intense on both a physical and mental level, yet extremely rewarding. I feel that since I began practicing with him my taiji has improved immensely. In February 2005, along with two other foreign students of Master Chen Yu I accompanied him to Chenjiagou the village where taiji and his family originate. During this trip Master Chen Yu gave us a guided tour of the village and introduced us to some of his contemporaries. Having met other taiji masters of his generation and seen them practice I feel that Master Chen Yu’s knowledge and understanding of Chen style taiji is unparalleled.
In March 2005 Master Chen Yu kindly accepted me as an indoor student, I feel that this is a great honor, one that I do not take lightly and I hope to be able to prove to be a worthy student.
I have found him to be not just one of the best taiji teachers I have met, but simply one of the best teachers I have ever met of anything. I am looking forward to studying with him in the years to come.
